The ECSMI Leadership & Empowerment Retreat is an annual gathering that brings together scholars from the Evelyn Chuabe Scholarship & Mentorship Initiative (ECSMI). It is designed to support displaced girls and young women who have re-entered school to grow in confidence, self-belief, and purpose as they navigate education, displacement, and transition into adulthood.
For many ECSMI scholars, displacement has disrupted not only their schooling but also their sense of stability, belonging, and possibility. The retreat creates a dedicated space for healing, reflection, and reconnection, away from the pressures of survival and academic stress.
For many participants, the retreat is the first time they meet other girls who share similar experiences of displacement and determination. The sense of sisterhood built during the retreat strengthens peer networks that continue beyond the gathering, providing encouragement and support throughout the academic year. Many ECSMI scholars carry the confidence and insights gained at the retreat back into their schools and communities, where they support peers, participate in school life, and envision futures shaped by choice rather than crisis.
