A sponsorship pathway that keeps displaced girls in school
The ECSMI Godparent Initiative is the sponsorship and giving model that powers the Evelyn Chuabe Scholarship & Mentorship Initiative (ECSMI).
For displaced girls affected by Cameroon’s Anglophone Crisis, even after finding safety in host communities, many face an impossible choice between survival and staying in school. Education is often interrupted or cut short, not because of lack of ability or motivation, but because of cost. A tuition fee of as little as $100 per year can be enough to force a girl out of secondary school or university. For others, vocational training offers a practical pathway to independence, yet access to training fees, tools, and support remains out of reach.
The Godparent Initiative exists to ensure that financial barriers do not end a girl’s education. While ECSMI provides scholarships, training, and mentorship to displaced girls and young women, the Godparent Initiative is how individuals, families, businesses, and institutions directly fund and sustain a girl’s education journey; from enrolment to completion.
ECSMI is the programme
The Godparent Initiative is how a girl’s education is financed and sustained.
By becoming a Godparent, you help remove the financial barriers that force displaced girls out of school and ensure they can learn with dignity, continuity, and hope.
Scholars are identified through a locally led and community-verified process that prioritises displaced girls who are out of school or at high risk of losing access to education due to conflict, displacement, or financial hardship.
Godparents choose their preferred commitment level (1 year minimum; 3 years encouraged for continuity) and are matched to a scholar.
